At a press conference today, the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) and the national League of Conservation Voters (LCV) announced a new campaign, The Price We All Pay, to curb the influence of polluter money in elections. As part of the campaign, the groups are urging California members of Congress to co-sponsor the Government by the People Act, and are raising awareness of the impacts of polluter money in politics at a time of record climate change impacts nationwide.

I'm proud to share this breaking news: The state legislature just passed the statewide ban on single-use plastic bags, SB 270! The final vote to send it to the governor's desk was a late-night concurrence vote, 22-15 in the State Senate, just minutes ago.

Today, several environmental, labor, and other groups delivered a letter to Attorney General Kamala Harris, writing on behalf of millions of our California members to express strong concerns about the potential manipulation of gasoline prices by oil companies, as transportation fuels come under the greenhouse gas emissions cap created by AB 32, California's landmark climate and clean energy law.

One would expect firefighters would know a thing or two about fire safety. So when they speak up and tell the state legislature that adding pounds of flame retardant chemicals to single pieces of furniture doesn't protect them, or folks whose houses or businesses catch fire, and in fact puts their lives MORE at risk, you would hope our lawmakers would listen.

In a nutshell, oil companies think they deserve a free pass to pollute as much as they always have.
